213,000 Candidates Begin Writing GCE as Registration Sees 8.7% Rise

The written phase of the Cameroon General Certificate of Education (GCE) begins on June 3, after witnessing an 8.7 percent surge in the number of registered candidates.

The head of the GCE Board‘s transitional management team, Bernadette Ndi, said all is set for the exams to kick off Tuesday, June 3, with 213,000 candidates.

Speaking to the state media on Sunday, she said strict procedures will be followed, and only candidates who have duly registered will write.

That is because there are two phases of registration. According to her, only candidates who finalised the second phase of registration and have the right registration number will take part.

“All writing material has been put in the centres to avoid confusion,” she said.

She revealed that 213,000 candidates will be sitting in for the exams across Cameroon’s 10 regions.

Papers for June 6 Postponed

Ahead of the writing tomorrow, the Minister of Secondary, Nalova Lyonga, rescheduled the papers for Friday, June 6, shifting them to Monday, June 9.

The rescheduling was owed to the Muslim Feast of the Ram, which is taking place on June 6. However, the time initially scheduled for these subjects remains unchanged.

This year, the GCE is still taking place amidst the ongoing Anglophone Crisis, which has disrupted education in the North West and South West Regions.

The increase in GCE registrations has been attributed to improved security and the reopening of several schools that were previously closed in the English-speaking regions.

That probably explains the increase in registered candidates.
