Higher Education: Ngaoundéré University Lecturers Threaten Strike Action Over Non-payment of Bonuses

The potential strike action has particularly been announced by the lecturers of the Faculty of Legal and Political Science of the University of Ngaoundéré.

These lecturers have stated the Non-payment of their Bonuses by the University as the main reason for a strike action which they have announced for April 12, 2021.

Yesterday April 07, 2021, a letter was sent by the disgruntled tutors to the Rector of the University of Ngaoundéré, Professor Mrs Uphie Chinje Melo, telling her office that the lecturers were going to cease all forms of pedagogic activities from April 12, should their demands not be met.

It is the second time that the lecturers of the Faculty of Legal and Political Science have written to the Administration of the Ngoundere University over issues concerning their bonuses. They had issued a correspondence back in February this year but were largely ignored.

In their latest letter to the Rector of the University, the lecturers expressed their contempt at the provocative silence of the University hierarchy and intimidation tactics.

According to media sources, Lecturers who dare demand for their bonuses are outrightly threatened with replacement by their assistants or new recruits.

In the letter announcing the strike action by the lecturers, a number of issues which they say have to be resolved were raised, some of which were: The payment of all rights of teachers; the payment of the research bonuses for the second quarter of the 2019-2020 academic year; Payments of teaching missions to Garoua for the first quarter of the 2020-2021 academic year; Transport cost for teaching missions in Garoua and Meiganga; and Payment of Teachers statutory research missions amongst other things.

The strike according to the letter, will continue until the Rector of the University is able to provide viable solutions likely to give back the faculty its image of yesteryears.
