Abdul Karim Ali, a muslim scholar and critic of poor governance in Cameroon has gone without food and water at gendarmerie headquarters in Yaounde for close to two weeks now.
Arbitrarily arrested upon his return from Switzerland on the 25th of September 2019, the critic for security reasons refused to take food or water offered to him by the officers. He opted to consume only what is brought to him by either the family or his lawyers, an option rejected at the gendarmerie headquater better known in its French acronym as SED.
According to a source we prefer not to name for security reasons, “…the gendarmerie as of Tuesday 8th October 2019 has not given him food brought by family on the frivolous excuse that hierarchy has not authorized it.Even the palette of water brought by his lawyers has not been given to him”.
The treatment has weakened Abdul Karim physically to a deplorable level with fears of major health issues that may develop.
Barristers Ayukotang Ndep Nkongho and Fonka Tomnyuy, lawyers of Abdul Karim Ali have been expressing disappointment given that an application of Habeas Corpus filed at the Mfoundi High Court in Yaounde to permit them assess the validity of the abduction or not and ensure his immediate release has not been granted.
Abdul Karim Ali was taken in detention by a mixed contingent of uniform men and plain clothe policemen in front of the Swiss embassy in Yaounde upon his return from Switzerland. He stepped out after a conversation with the Swiss ambassador about a mediation conference in Geneva Switzerland at the request of the Humanitarian Centre for Dialogue (HD).
Human Right Watch this week called for the release of the activist stating that Cameroon already has a poor record of human rights violation, arbitrary arrest and detention of people.
