By Amina Hilda
Mohamadou Hadi Barkindo, an accountant at the National Refinery Company (SONARA) has been announced as the new Lamido of Tibati in the Adamawa region.
The 40-year-old was elected on June 17, 2023, and is the 21st Lamido of Tibati.
The new traditional and spiritual leader received 12 of the 14 available votes from the Electoral College.
The election of a new Lamido of Tibati comes a few weeks after the former Lamido, His Majesty El Hadj Hamidou Mohaman Bello, was announced dead on the evening of Friday, May 12.
The head of Lamido’s communication office, El Hadj Ouba Ali Mohaman, made the announcement on his official Facebook page but revealed no details on the cause of his death.
The election of a new Lamido gives the local population an opportunity to heal from the shock of the passing of their former ruler who according to locals set a very high bar as:
“The only Lamido in the northern part driving the growing development of his locality. He loved Tibati. He loved the people of Tibati. He was the only Lamido who communicated permanently about his city, its inhabitants, its elites, and its history.”
Mohamadou Hadi Barkindo, therefore, has big shoes to fill and many will be expecting that he continues in the footsteps of his predecessor.
