Adamou Ndam Njoya dies at 77

Cameroon’s opposition leader, Adamou Ndam Njoya is no more.

The leader of the Cameroon Democratic Union, CDU died last night in a hospital in the country’s political capital.

News of the CDU leader’s unstable health condition already hit Cameroon’s political scene in 2018 when he was not seen by his supporters due to ill health. Ndam Njoya only took part in a rally only once in his native village in Foumban to dispell rumours of his incapability to replace Paul Biya as President.

Sources say Ndam Njoya has spent several months receiving treatment at a South African Hospital.

Who Is Ndam Njoya?

Adamou Ndam Njoya was born 8 May 1942. The Cameroonian politician, lawyer, author, and professor was Minister of National Education from 1977 to 1980. He has been the President of the Cameroon Democratic Union -UDC, an opposition party, since 1991.

He has also been the Mayor of Foumban since 1996, and from 1997 to 2007 he was a Deputy in the National Assembly.

He unsuccessfully ran as a presidential candidate in the 1992 and 2004 elections.

He recently handed over the Foumban council to his wife, Patricia Ndam Njoya, who won the mayoral and legislative elections on February 9th 2020.
