AFCON 2021: Garoua risks not hosting group games

The city of Garoua may be written off as part of the host towns for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON2021) Tournament for infrastructural reasons.

It is widely reported that the lack of adequate and up-to-standard accomodation facilities to host players staff and fans is a major obstacle to city acting as host.

For now, it is revealed that only two separate standard accomodation facilities are available in the town, with the others still under construction.

The construction of these structures is expected to last longer than expected and hence not be ready in time for the tournament.

It is thus speculated that the city might only be able to host games only as from the quarter finals of the tournament.

In a related subject, the AFCON Draws that were targeted to take place this month have been postponed to a later day. This setback has cast serious doubts on many Cameroonians who have started having flashes of CAF’s 2019 AFCON cancelation decision.

With the Covid-19 situation in the country at a worrying stage, coupled with the situation of the Anglophone Crises rocking the Northwest and Southwest regions, there are fears that the hosting rights of Cameroon are once more hanging on a balance.
