AFCON2021: Buea Council Workers Forced to Attend AFCON Games

Workers of the Buea Council, in the South West Region of Cameroon have been given stern orders to attend games of the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium, or risk getting sanctioned.

This decision has come at a time that games at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium has witnessed a relatively very low turnout from fans.

In a recent release, the town’s mayor said this was on instructions from the South West Regional governor.

Situated in one of the two troubled Anglophone regions of Cameroon, many football lovers have absconded games for fear of attacks from Anglophone separatists groups.

Separatists have warned several times that they will try to disrupt games, and will also be on the lookout for Anglophones who chose to defy them by attending games.

A similar order has also been given to the staff of the University of Buea, with the school Administration asking all the staff to turn up at the stadium on all match days to fill up the stadiums.

Elsewhere too, local administrators of major AFCON host cities have also been taking up necessary measures to fill up stadiums that have characteristically been sparse.

The Head of State, President Paul Biya to find a solution to the empty stadiums has ordered for all civil service works nationally to close by 2pm latest, and Government schools by 1pm. This is expected to run through to February 04, 2022.
