The Chairperson of the African Union Commission has hailed the Swiss-led mediation announced late June 2019, to seek solutions to the armed conflict in the restive North West and South West regions.
Moussa Faki Mahamat in a statement July 27, 2019 says, “all parties to engage in this path in a spirit of compromise with a view to reach a political solution, should put national interest above any consideration.”
Moussa Faki welcomes the initiative of the Government and stakeholders in Cameroon “to resolve, through dialogue, the crisis in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.”
The Chairperson also reaffirms the African Union’s support for any initiative aimed at peace, stability and national reconciliation in Cameroon, and reiterates the Commission’s readiness to contribute to this initiative.
The EU, US have backed the Swiss led negotiation which is still at the level of pre-talks.
The anglophone crisis which is in its third year has according to the UN killed at least 2000 people, displaced over 550.000 and prevented tens of thousands of kids from going to school.
The crisis which began as a peaceful protest transformed into an armed conflict when marginalisation claims tabled by lawyers and teachers were ignored by the Biya regime.
