After Cup of Cameroon victory:
Anxious Bamenda Populace May Only Welcome PWD Home Thursday


Supporters of Public Works Department, PWD Bamenda Football Club in the North West region may have to wait till Thursday to welcome their team home with the trophy of the Cup of Cameroon.


The team defeated Astres of Douala Sunday March 13 by one goal to zero to lift the trophy 43 years after their last attempt. With the population now anxious to welcome the team home, PWD Bamenda may rather be camping Mbouda this Monday.


The camping is ahead of their first match for thew football season to take place in Bafousam on Wednesday. It’s only after this f match that the team shall touch down in bamenda Thursday or Friday sources, have hinted.The Abakwa boys are expected to play the opening match of the new season against Bamboutous of Mbouda.


The Abakwa boys corrected their 1967 and 1979 errors yesterday March 13 at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde. The match brought together North West elite and stakeholders among them Governor Lele L’Afrique and Social Democratic Front, SDF, chairman Ni John Fru Ndi.

Following the team’s electrifying performance and praise worthy achievement, the effervescence among fans in Bamenda has been contagious.

Many continue to await the arrival of the trophy in the days ahead. The champions will be expected to tour the city with the trophy, stopping at focal points such as the Governor’s Office,Mobile Nkwen,City Chemist and Hospital Roundabout and other major areas.


While the region celebrates, there are heightened calls for a football pitch to be constructed in the North West region. Many fans and football lovers have reminded football authorities in the country of the need to construct a modern football pitch in Bamenda. They call was revisited yesterday with placards and banners with messages such as ” we need a stadium in the North West.


A brief history

PWD social football club of Bamenda was created in 1972 by the then ministry of works. The team has over the years groomed players they can boast of like the assistant coach of the Indomitable Lions, Augustine Simo, the Intermediate Lions shot stopper Hashou Keridou, former Lions striker, Pius Ndefi just to name but these. They reached the finals of the 1967 and 1979 cup of Cameroon but failed to clinch the trophy.


They equally participated in the CAF Confederations Cup but were ousted by TP Mazembe of Congo and relegated. PWD bounced back in 2019 when they won the elite 1 and this time around have made history by becoming the third team to bring the Cameroon cup to the North West after Kumbo strikers in 2000 and Young Sports academy in 2013.
