Agbor Balla insists,”The State, MRC must work together against the spread of COVID-19″

Human rights lawyer, Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor Balla has weighed into the ongoing disagreement between the government and Prof Maurice Kamto over battling the coronavirus pandemic.

Barrister Nkongho who also heads the Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) took to twitter today to call on the government and CRM party to work hand in glove to fight the virus. “The State and MRC” he wrote “must work together against the spread of COVID-19.”

“Let us not politicize COVID-19. Let us protect the population first” he warned adding that “politics will come later. We must Quarantine political COVID-19. We shall Conquer.”

Barrister Nkongho’s call comes after the government pushed through with plans to put an end to Prof Maurice Kamto’s Survie Cameroon Survival Initiative (SCSI) to combat coronavirus.

Minister Paul Atanga Nji’s warning had met with resistance from the politician who said the initiative was not bound by the legal requirements the Minister cited. Today, the territorial administration Minister called on the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) to launch an inquiry into the SCSI’s activities.

It is worth noting that last week, PM Dion Ngute warned ministers against taking individual actions in the fight against COVID-19.

Even though Prof Maurice Kamto is yet to react to the latest development, he had said President Biya would be held responsible for anything that happens to any member of the initiative. The SCSI fund in about a week raised over €500.000, half it’s target.
