Akwaya MP maintains sealed lips as hired mercenaries kill, abduct Oliki locals in land conflict

By David Atangana

At least three people have been killed and scores abducted in Oliki, Akwaya subdivision, Manyu division of the south West region of Cameroon, as a land conflict between Balin and Oliki escalates.

Among those killed, according to reports, are two teenage boys and an adult.

The incident took place on Sunday June 12, 2022.

Genesis

Some Balin natives are said to have encroached into to Oliki land, a month ago, causing a roar between the two villages.

MMI however  learnt that the problem was settled amicably, until recently that fresh violence erupted leading to loss of lives.

“These two communities who don’t share a common boundary, had  a problem about a month ago. But we thought the problem was settled,” a source told MMI.

The people of Balin reportedly brought in armed men a month after, who caused havoc in Oliki village.

“…..the Balin people went and hired armed men from Benue state Nigeria who came to the disputed land and started shooting any Oliki local on sight,” the source added.

“They killed three people-two boys and an adult,” the source continued , adding that,” some villagers were abducted and taken away.”

MP looks the other way

Some locals say the Member of parliament for Akwaya has maintained sealed lips over the actions of the Balin people.

“We were expecting him as our representative in parliament to react, but he has been quite. We are not happy that he has abandoned us and is not saying about our ordeal,” explained our source, who refused to be named.

At the time of this report, the MP in question was not available for comments.
