American Bar presses UN to facilitate dialogue to end Anglophone crisis

The American Bar Association, ABA has raised a number of worries about the crisis in Cameron’s Anglophone regions, seeking to bring the war to an end.

At its annual gathering, the ABA adopted a resolution on the fighting in the North West and South West regions and the wellbeing of humanitarian workers, prisoners, and other parties to the war.

Resolution 102C “Urges the United States, other nations, and the United Nations to facilitate and promote neutral and inclusive dialogues between the government of Cameroon and separatist leaders; urges adequate funding by the United States and other nations for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’ Humanitarian Response Plan”.

In the resolution, ABA also expressed its desire for bodies like the African Union, Commonwealth of Nations, and the Francophonie to support the above actions.

It also “urges the President of the United States to continue to withhold beneficiary country status under the U.S. Trade and Development Act of 2000 until the Cameroon government demonstrates measurable progress in establishing the rule of law, including by providing fair trials for prisoners detained in connection with protests against the government.”

The calls come after a seemingly failed attempt by government to reach a ceasefire deal with separatists. The government has also failed to heed to calls for a third party to mediate and bring the crisis to an end.
