An avocado wine production company launched in Cameroon

A Cameroonian company has launched the first-ever production of wine from a green/red edible fruit known as avocado pear.

The ceremony announcing the launch of the avocado wine company took place on August 27, 2023, in Mbouda, a town in the West Region of Cameroon.

A timely move

Melu’u Piya (loosely translated as drink from avocado) is arguably the only company in the country that produces wine made from avocado pear

.

In Cameroon, companies producing natural drinks are almost nonexistent.

According to the head of the Melu’u Piya company, Willy Sob, the aim is to boost local production, popularly coined “Made in Cameroon,” a slogan, championed by entrepreneurs to encourage and promote the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“I can assure you that very soon we will have a full-fledged wine production Center with local avocados, to be able to promote local production,” Willy Sob told journalists.

He went ahead to note that the production “will make it possible to offer Cameroonian consumers a very high-quality wine…Once this inventory is done, we will be able to give you figures on production, the cycle, and even in times of scarcity.”

Foreign Imports

Cameroon, according to statistics, imports a lot of fizzy drinks, which experts say are unhealthy for the human body.

Cameroon-based companies like Boissons du Cameroun, formally Brasseries du Cameroun, are equally engaged in the production of drinks that are, however, considered detrimental to human health.

For the first time in Cameroon, many are being introduced to a factory that will be producing natural drinks from avocado, sparking great relief.

For instance, Emmanuel Sandagant wrote on Facebook, “This is powerful. Courage to our brave Cameroonians, and also let us consume what we produce as desired by those in power.”

Also, Armstrong hailed the initiative, stating that, Indeed, Cameroon is a country full of potential. We have the ability to create a lot with our resources (bananas, watermelon, apples, etc.) In short, God bless the continent of Cameroon.”

Why the West Region?

Melu’u Piya is based in Mbouda, a town in the West Region of Cameroon. Mbouda is renowned for its large avocado and mango (other fruit) production capacities.

The wine will be produced and supplied throughout Cameroon and abroad.
