Anglophone Conflict: Soldiers torture civilian till he passes out in Ndu

Cameroonian soldiers have tortured a civilian in Ndu, a subdivision in Donga Mantung, one of many divisions in the country’s troubled English speaking regions.

In a nine minute video making rounds on social media, the uniformed officers are seen questioning the civilian over the whereabouts of his brother believed to be a separatist fighter.

Even while being tortured, the civilian maintains that he has no idea about where his brother is. He would later pass out from the beatings.

During the exchange, one of the soldiers said in Ewondo (a local language in the centre region of Cameroon) that: “we will deal with him, ‘Elanga Zime Bi’ look at his eyes.”

They then, questioned him, asking: “Where is your brother”

He responded saying, “my brother is in the bush, I do not know his whereabouts.”

About one minute into the video, the soldiers poured water on him, then used a cutlass to beat his stomach, his buttocks and then, his legs.

As they tortured him, the victim maintained his innocence. “… If I knew his whereabouts would have told you,” he added.

The torture continued until the victim passed out. Then one of the soldiers is heard saying: “Guys, leave him, to rest before we proceed, we cannot yet tell if he is Amba.”

It is still unclear whether the victim survived the degrading treatment.

The trending video is one of several instances recorded in the four year long crisis that has left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands in dire humanitarian aid.

Many of such grave rights abuses have so far gone unpunished.
