Anglophone crisis IDPs among victims of shops demolished in Yaounde market

Some Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs of the Anglophone crisis are among hundreds of persons whose shops at the Ekounou Market in Yaounde were demolished by the council.

The shops were demolished April 3. It left many traders of the Ekounou market bitter with some saying goods estimated at not less than 200 million FCFA were destroyed in the process.

One of the IDPs said: “Because of the ongoing crisis in the North West and South West regions, I found myself here in Yaoundé. I have been trying to see how I can meet up with my family. This is where we were managing life. I don’t know what they want us to do.”

However, the Yaoundé IV Council that carried out the demolition said the action came after a series of warnings and quit notices, served the traders.

“… We were to start in January but until now they decided not to move, so we decided to go the hard way,” an official said, adding that the council wants to construct a new market.
