Anglophone Crisis: Separatist Fighters Under Fire For Worsening Food Crisis

By Soulemanu Buba

Separatist fighters operating in the South West Region of Cameroon have come under fire from Cameroonians across the globe after they attacked a van transporting around 200 bags of Irish potatoes in the West Region of Cameroon.

Images of the burnt vehicle emerged on social media on Monday, 4th July 2022, which showed Irish potatoes scattered on the ground.

Talking to MMI, Theodore A. said destroying food meant for the people is a war crime,

“How can people say they are fighting for the suffering masses, yet the same masses are the ones going through pain in the hands of their supposed liberators. Look at what poor farmers invested their energy in, it has been destroyed by separatist fighters. This is bad,” he said.

While thanking God that no one was killed in the incident, Kenfack as he wanted to be addressed said,

“This is more than killing, destroying food crops meant for the hungry people at a time when having a square meal per day is only reserved for the rich is more than killing. I just wish this war ends so that we don’t continue seeing all these heartbreaking occurrences.”

Government forces have also had their own fair share of criticism from the population who accused them of destroying their foodstuffs. Large maize farms have been destroyed in Ndop and other places by government forces.

Houses have been attacked and burnt with dry maize and other food items inside, including livestock.

As the two factions continue to fight, the masses keep on bearing the brunt of the conflict.
