Government to reinforce security in West Region after recent separatist attacks

A decision to reinforce the security levels of the West Region by sending in more Cameroonian troops is the outcome of a visit by the Defense Minister to Bafousam.

The Minister Delegate in charge of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo was in the West Region on a working visit on the high instructions of the Head of State to assess the security situation.

As a neighbouring region to crises-stricken North-West Region, some parts of the West region have seen their own fair share of attacks coming from separatist fighters who are gradually extending the conflict to the western region.

The latest of these attacks happened on July 14, in Babadjou. A military outpost was attacked by the separatist who succeeded to kill two soldiers, and injured a few others.

Following the visit of Minister Beti Assomo, the Government has reaffirmed its desire to do everything possible to ensure that the violence does not spread any further out of the Northwest Region.

It has announced that a strengthening in terms of military staff and resources would be happening soon enough.

“We are going to follow this situation very very closely because it is out of question to let the security peril that we have in the South-West and North-West to migrate to the West Region,” declared Joseph Beti Assomo at the end of his visit.
