Another US mass shooting targets mainly children: raises fundamental questions about the country’s security system

The death toll has increased to 21, including 18 school children after a gunman opened fire at a primary school in the US state of Texas.

Authorities say, “the shooter was … an 18-year-old male who resided in Uvalde. It is believed that he abandoned his vehicle and entered the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde with a handgun and he may have also had a rifle, but that is not yet confirmed.”

The school shooting in Uvalde is the latest in a string of deadly acts of gun violence over the past two weeks in the US.

On May 14, gunmen attacked a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighbourhood of Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people in what investigators say was a racist hate crime.

The country has seen 212 mass shootings so far this year, according to a tally by the Gun Violence Archive, a US non-profit that defines what constitutes mass shootings.

The US president has denounced mass shootings as a “national embarrassment” and promised to enact stricter gun regulations.

“These kinds of mass shootings rarely happen elsewhere in the world. Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our backbone to have the courage to deal with it? It’s time to turn this pain into action,” said President Joe Biden.

What is your impression of such happenings in the USA, which is meant to be a role model for other countries in terms of security?
