Arsenal drops crucial points as they come from behind to salvage a 3-3 draw with last place Southampton

Arsenal has all but squandered their chances of winning the English Premier League this season as they failed to secure a vital win against relegation-threatened Southampton.

The Gunners are now five points above second place Manchester City who have two games in hand.

Arsenal earns a point against Southampton in the Premier League, drawing 3-3 at the Emirates Stadium.

Aaron Ramsdale’s error allowed Carlos Alcaraz to open the score for the visitors only 27 seconds, before Theo Walcott returned to torment his former club to put the Saints ahead.

Before the halftime, Gabriel Martinelli pulled one back, but Duje Caleta-Car restored Southampton’s two-goal lead.

The Gunners appeared to be heading for a rare defeat, but late goals from Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka earned them a share of the spoils.

The point may not suit either side’s aspirations this season, but Arsenal will be relieved to leave the game with something.

Arsenal became the first Premier League team to avoid loss when trailing by two or more goals in the late 88th minute since Newcastle against Everton in January 2020.

Southampton became the first side in Premier League history to begin the day from the bottom of the standings and score three or more goals against the team that begins the day at the top.

Given today’s result, should City win their remaining games, they will take the title which some weeks ago was firmly in Arsenal’s sight.
