Atanga Nji Will Not Frighten Aid Agencies – Human Rights Network Says

The Network for the Defence of Human Rights in Central Africa says aid groups will not be frightened by Atanga Nji, Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration.

The Network for the defence of human rights in Central Africa, RHEDAC Director Maximillien Ngo Mbe has challenged claims made by Cameroon’s Territorial Administration Minister Atanga Nji last week regarding the situation in the Anglophone regions.

To Maximillien Ngo Mbe, Minister Atanga Nji’s claim that organisations have been transporting arms to separatist fighters is unfounded.

Appreciating government’s recent material assistance to internally displaced persons in the North West and South West regions, the RHEDAC Director said civil society groups and humanitarian bodies will not be frightened with the words of the minister.

Regarding President Biya’s state of the nation’s address on the 31st of December 2019, Maximilien Ngo says the message was inconsistent.

Minister Atanga Nji who has been one of the most controversial members of government on the start of the Anglophone crisis last week stated that there is no humanitarian crisis in the Anglophone regions. He also declared that only about 152,000 people are internally displaced in the conflict hit regions, a declaration that been widely criticised for being false.

According to the UN, 4.3 million are currently displaced in the North West and South West regions alone. Other humanitarian groups working in the regions have also presented figures completely different from that of the minister.

Atanga Nji, it should be recalled, had once said there was no Anglophone problem, raising concerns of the truth in his subsequent declarations.
