Over 30 persons have perished in a stampede after a large crowd gathered at a church Vicinity in Port Harcourt Nigeria, for a “Shop For Free” Program.
According to reports, the charity event was organized by the Kings Assembly church, to take place today May 28, 2022.
However, the “Shop For Free” event later turned sour after a stampede which left more than 30 persons, mostly children, dead.
According to an eyewitness, “I counted about 21 dead bodies on the ground. This is not the first time the church is holding this programme but the crowd since yesterday till this morning was much.”
It is reported that persons could be sighted at the church premise a day to the day of the event, so they could be first to benefit from the free gifts.
In the morning of May 28 around 8 am, while the crowd impatiently waited for the gate to be opened, a sport session arrived and made use of the small gate to access the church.
This however gave chance to the anxious crowd who in an attempt to use the small gate, caused a stampede which left dozen of persons lifeless.
The exact number of persons confirmed dead is however yet to be known, as death tolls keep rising.
