Authorities seize 127 bags of illegal medications in Limbe

Law enforcement officers in Limbe intercepted and seized 127 bags of illegal medications imported from Nigeria on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The seizure marks a significant step in the ongoing battle against the importation of illicit goods in Cameroon.

The operation began when officers, suspecting unusual activity, intercepted a vehicle and alerted the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) of Fako, Viang Mekala.

Upon arrival at the scene, SDO Mekala questioned those unloading the vehicle, who initially claimed the bags contained plastic wrappings.

However, further investigation revealed this was a lie.

The bags were found to contain various medications intended to treat ailments such as cough and malaria.

“Today in Limbe, at about 6:00 o’clock, the police seized an important stock of contraband medications,” SDO stated.

“The information those arrested gave was that the goods were simple plastics, though equally banned in Cameroon. But from further investigation, we discovered that the bags contained illegally imported medications.”

The seizure indicates the persistent challenge faced by the Cameroonian government in curbing the influx of illicit goods, including fuel, plastic papers, and medications from Nigeria.

Despite efforts, the trade continues to thrive, often with allegations of collusion involving law enforcement officers and government officials.
