Bamenda: Ex-fighters rise against government’s “fake promises”

Ex-separatist fighters at the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) center in Bamenda, North West Region of Cameroon have decried living conditions in the facility.

The boys and girls moved to the office of the governor Monday, February 15th, 2021, demanding the government to fulfill the mouth-watering promises that convinced them to lay down their arms and surrender to the government.

“Government promised to train and later finance projects to ensure our social integration into the society. This has not been realized for many of us,” one of the irate ex-fighter stated.

Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique has called on the ex-fighters to document their grievances while promising to visit the DDR Centre this Wednesday, February 17th, 2021.

In a press conference last month, the Director of the DDR center in Bamenda debunked rumors that ex-fighters in Bamenda were planning to go on strike. To Gabsa Sixtus, the ex-fighters were receiving the best of treatment.

Ex-fighters in Bamenda feel cheated given that the government disbursed huge sums of money for ex-fighters in Buea after their strike action while those in Bamenda under similar conditions have not been treated as such.
