Bamenda: Military stationed in GTHS Nkwen turn against students as administration remains mute

By David Atangana

Soldiers incharge of security at Government Technical High school Nkwen, Bamenda have reportedly turned against students of the institution, MMI has gathered from victims and students.

Students have allegedly been transformed into ‘punching bags’ by the soldiers.

Sources say the situation has been going on for a while but the administration has maintained a suspicious silence.

Things got to it’s peak Thursday November 17, 2022 as students rose in anger.

An amateur video obtained by MMI show gun carrying soldiers flexing muscles with some students.

The gate of the institution was flung open by protesting students and after violence erupted.

“Violence has erupted at GTHS Nkwen. Soldiers are beating and harassing students and the principal is saying nothing,” a student at GTHS told MMI.

It is reported that the said soldiers have arrogated to themselves the role of discipline masters.

“The military has been harassing students for overgrown hair and nails which is not their duty,” the source revealed, adding that: “it’s the role of the discipline masters, not that of soldier.”

“This is not the first time they are doing this, they have to protect us but they harass us instead,” said another student.

Since the escalation of the Anglophone crisis, soldiers stationed to guard learning institutions have often been accused of harassing students.

Should they continue to guard schools or sent to the barracks?
