The silence of the Police in response to allegations of their involvement in aiding the illegal drug trade has left residents of Bamenda concerned and disillusioned.
Oumarou Bakari, a suspect recently arrested in connection with drug trafficking, stunned authorities with his claims that law enforcement officers were complicit in the illicit activities.
Bakari’s statement, in which he admitted to not attempting to escape during the police raid because he believed they were there to collect bribes as usual, has sent shockwaves through the community.
“I was rather surprised when they arrested us,” Bakari added, shedding light on a troubling dynamic between law enforcement and criminal elements.
The arrest of Bakari and over 25 others on April 28 in Old Town, Bamenda II Subdivision, initially appeared to be a positive step towards curbing drug-related crime.
However, since then, the continued silence of the police has left many questioning the integrity of their efforts.

Residents are demanding answers and assurances that steps will be taken to address any wrongdoing and restore trust in law enforcement.
“If the police know they are not guilty as insinuated by Bakari, they should clear the air” said Delphine, a resident of Bamenda.
“Their silence means they are guilty, and confirms our doubts,” said another city dweller.
In the meantime, the drug trade continues to flourish in Old Town and other neighborhoods.
