Bamenda: Soldiers reportedly kill two at wake keep

By Soulemanu Buba

Cameroon soldiers have reportedly killed two boys around Old Moghamo neighborhood on the outskirts of Bamenda, Northwest Regional capital.

The two were earlier this week pulled out from a wake keep service that was taking place around the vicinity and shot dead, MMI learned.

But early this Saturday morning, their bodies were still lying there.

Many have been bewildered at the killing which adds to many other unaccounted deaths caused by both soldiers and separatist fighters in the Northwest region.

On January 7, media reported how soldiers stormed a funeral ceremony in Bambui, a town located few kilometers from Bamenda, and shot dead a man who was wearing a masquerade as part of the culture at most funeral ceremonies in the Northwest Region.

Like many other of such summary killings, the Cameroon government maintained silence over the issue.

Bamenda and many parts of the Northwest region have witnesses an uneasy calm for a while now with fewer incidents reported.

However, many armed separatist groups have remain active in the region and are launch sporadic attacks on soldiers, some of which are deadly.

Amid hopes that the six-year conflict in the Anglophone Regions could be resolved, the Cameroon government dampened them by renouncing Canada-mediated peace talks with separatist leaders.

The crisis that degenerated in to an armed conflict in 2017 has killed about 6,000 people and displaced over 1 million others, according to humanitarian NGOs.
