Bamenda:
Suspected Amba Fighters Open Fire on Vehicle, kill nurse, wound doctor

By Timfuchi Aaron

Armed men suspected to be separatist fighters opened fire on a vehicle Saturday February 26 around Mile 90 Nsongwa in Bamenda, regional capital of Cameroon’s restive North West region killing a nurse and wounding a doctor in the process.

The killed nurse, Shey Janet was a long-serving worker in charge of the Women’s Health Program of the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services, CBCHS. The suspected Amba boys are said to have mounted a checkpoint where the incident happened.

According to information from the CBCHS, bullets were shot through the windscreen of one of the vehicles transporting the health workers. The team of health personnel was said to be returning from a mission in Ashong and Bali. They are said to provided healthcare to hundreds of people suffering from multiple health problems before returning to meet the mishap.

In a brief church service held shortly after Saturday’s attack, the CBCHS authorities and workers said their only hope is in Christ. The prayed for God to intervene and bring the crisis to an end.

The medical team was a joint community health outreach team. The attack on the medical team adds to a good number of others on healthcare providers that have seen many killed under painful circumstances.
