Bamileke chief declares: There has never been an elected official in Cameroon since 1960

The traditional ruler of the Bamendjou people in the West Region, Soukoudjou Rameau who is known for not holding back on giving his political opinions irrespective of whom it concerns, last Sunday on Equinoxe Tv made the damning remarks.

According to the chief of the Bamendjou people, Cameroon has never had a democratically elected official in the country, beginning from the legislative elections to the presidential elections.

“Those who say that they are MPs, I tell you that since 1960 there has never been an elected representative in Cameroon. Since 1960, there have never been free elections in Cameroon” he stated on Verité en Face, Equinoxe TV.

The outspoken chief also expressed his frustrations and his disappointment with the opposition parties inability to challenge the ruling CPDM party for more than the 3 decades since the acceptance of multi-party politics in the country.

“I am disappointed with the opposition. Since 1960 that I give them my support. What did they do with this support… what are the 300 opposition parties for in Cameroon?” he questioned rhetorically.

Chief Soukoudjou Rameau is one of the very few traditional rulers who have outrightly stood up against government’s policies in Cameroon.
His fearlessness and ability to speak to truth to power has equally made him one of the most respected traditional rulers of the grass field area.
