Chadian born Abbas Mahamat Tolli, Governor of the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), says he requested the general manager of Cameroon Postal Service (CAMPOST) on the 15th of April 2020 to rewrite a request for the authorisation of ‘settlement and clearing system’ in English language.
According a release signed Monday April 20, Abbas Mahamat Tolli states that his demand was not ill intended but was a demand to ease the fast understanding of the message for appropriate actions to be taken.
By “rejecting” the document because it was presented in English language he has received massive criticism on social media most especially from Anglophone Cameroonians.
According to Bar. Tamfu Richard on a post on his Facebook account, rejecting the document because it was written in English and demanding that it should be translated to French for BEAC to pay attention to it violates article 59 of CEMAC treaty that approved four languages that include English, French, Spanish and Arab as official languages.
While many have been calling on the governor of BEAC to resign for fueling the marginalisation of Anglophone community in Cameroon, pro regime activists think Abbas Mahamat Tolli’s background (Chadian) indicated that he can’t read English, reason why he demanded the document in French language.
