Biaka University Buea braves COVID-19 odds to matriculate 1,205 students

By Tata Mbunwe
The Biaka University Institute of Buea, BUIB, matriculated 1,205 students into its three schools, among them the School of Medical Sciences, and the School of Social and Management Sciences.

The ceremony held at a time when some higher learning institutions, such as the University of Buea, postponed matriculations for fear of the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to guest speaker at today’s matriculation ceremony, Prof. Margaret Endeley, the students are called upon to shun deviant behavior, respect their staff and schoolmates and cultivate the two major goals of education: intelligence and character.

The ceremony officially made the students part of the Biaka academic family and was a time to acquaint the students with the rules governing the institution, according to BUIB registrar, Dr. Mary Che Lum.

“The students are expected to a use to the rules and regulations of the Institution after taking the matriculation oath and they will be penalized if they do anything contrary to the oath they have taken,” she said.

The Institution graduated its 19th batch of students in November 2019, consisting of 613 students from more than six fields.

Biaka University has, for over 19 years now, remained one of the most reputable medical training institutions in Cameroon with the school producing the nation-wide best results in the 2019 Higher National Diploma examinations in Nursing and Medical Laboratory Science.

Newly matriculated student, Thierry Mebune says he chose the Biaka institute over the dozens of higher institutions in Cameroon due to the school’s reputable quality in training medical personnel.

“I came here because I have been hearing a lot of positive results about the school. I believe BUIB will help me achieve the dreams I have with its numerous resources. It will help me become a good nurse, and not only that, but also to become a good human being in society,” said Thierry, Mebune, first year Nursing student.
