BIR Soldiers in South West Set For May 20 celebrations

The Commander of the Rapid Intervention Batallion, BIR of Cameroon’s military in the restive South West region, Colonel Rene Danzambe, has said the officers under his command are ready to celebrate the 50th edition of the National Unity Day this May 20.


Colonel Danzambe made the observation in a media outing on the sidelines of preparations for the day in Buea, capital of the South West region.


His assurance however come amid an atmosphere of tight security coupled with a separatist-imposed ghost town that has already affected places such as Kumba.


He told reporters that: “All the measures have been taken so that the feast will be a very good one. You know it’s National Day, it’s a feast of the nation, so everybody will feast in unity and in peace.”


Danzambe assured the population of total security, citing the placement of the BIR officers at strategic points of the region, for the security of the general public.


According to him, officers of the BIR will not only provide security to the people but will ensure the transportation of the population.. “The officers on the field in the different blocking points and even concerning the different patrols who would be moving around the towns. They know that they will protect the citizens. they will protect all who will come to march.”


The Colonel stressed on the existing relationship between the citizens and the security forces.

According to him, the BIR soldiers do not only focus on protecting the people but also assist the population socially and economically.


“The military and civilian cooperation is very much alive. Recently in Talangaye in Nguti subdivision, we gave to the population some foodstuffs and conducted free medical screening,” the Colonel reiterated.


It should be noted that the 50th edition of the national Unity day will be celebrated tomorrow under the theme: “Defense and security forces at the service of the people in preserving social peace and National cohesion, a guarantee for an emerging Cameroon.”
