Bishop of Mbalmayo suspends Priest for beating up an old man

A Catholic Priest at the Saints Phillip and Jacques Catholic Mission in Ndongko, Father Cyprian Amougui has been suspended by the Bishop of Mbalmayo after he decided to publicly flog an old man who had been suspected of witchcraft.

The Catholic Church authorities of the Diocese of Mbalmayo have expressed shock and disdain over an act that is said to have brought shame upon the Christian community.

The old man who was being tortured and filmed at the request of the priest said he was brought by his son to the Catholic hospital in Ndongko because he was sick.

“After my consultation, I went to visit the parish. On my way back from the visit, the Parish priest asked me to follow him, and that was how he started flogging me,” he recounted.

With the atrocious video making rounds on social media, the Bishop of Mbalmayo, His Lordship Joseph Marie Ndi Okala, penned a letter announcing the suspension of the priest, stating that his actions “created a scandal and confusion.”

He has therefore been stopped from carrying out all his priestly duties till further notice and has been asked to take time and reflect on his own and rebuild his spirituality.
