Britain’s Got Talent 2023: Viggo Venn booed by crowd, raises questions regarding talent-selection criteria

By Abia Noumbissi

The 2023 season of Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) concluded on Sunday — with Norwegian clown and comedian Viggo Venn announced as the winner.

With the level of talent present on the show this year, the announcement came as a huge surprise to many who were present, and to the viewers watching from home.

As the winner was being announced, many in the audience could be heard audibly booing as Viggo was called the winner. They have now taken to Twitter to share their views on the show’s finale.

“So this is the best we’ve had on the show this year, is it? Raelly?” reacted a Twitter user.

Another one who could not conceal his disappointment said, “The crowd booing says it all how on earth did this act win it’s an embarrassment there was so much better deserving talent on that stage tonight BGT this year has been an utter joke.”

Joe said he has been a fan of BGT over the years, but how and who emerged winner this year has forced him to question the genuineness of the show. “…in my considered opinion, this outcome is entirely unjust. I am uncertain if the viewers in the United Kingdom shared my perspective, but it was evident to me that the young singers and the young magician showcased exceptional talent and undoubtedly deserved the coveted title. Not sure what happened. Was the voting fixed?” stated Joe.

13-year-old solo-dancer, Lilianna Clifton and 14-year-old-magician Cillian O’Connor were named runners-up in this year’s BGT. Some other favorites who were thought to win were amputee dancer Musa Motha and the dance group, Ghetto Kids from Uganda.

However, “Vigo was seriously funny and charismatic,” said another twitter user.

His view was shared by another fan. “Love to see the people complaining get up on stage and get people laughing like Vigo did. A classic clown act mixed with a hilarious gimic. Utterly brilliant and absolutely a talent.”

About BGT

The winner of the show is determined by public vote and in the final scores released by ITV, the network BGT is hosted on.

Viggo received 22.5% of votes. 13.1% for Clifton and O’Connor, 11.8.

However, a viewer who put the figures to question said: “I think the voting app was wrong! It didn’t work correctly for me and took an extra vote on contestants that I didn’t want! The same happened for my son too….”

Viggo Venn will receive £250,000 and a spot to perform in this year’s Royal Variety Performance, an annual fundraiser for the Royal Variety Charity, which King Charles III will attend as well as other members of the royal family and high-ranking officials.
