Buea Central Prison: One Anglophone detainee dies for lack of medical care.

By David Atangana

An Anglophone detainee has reportedly died in custody at the Buea Central Prison in the South West region of Cameroon, an inmate has anonymously confirmed to MMI.

The inmate whose name MMI got as Tanger Rudolf Angue died after prison authorities ignored giving him medical attention in his sick bed.

News of his death broke out Tuesday November 14, 2022.

Sources say he was reportedly sick and prison authorities only took him to the hospital when the situation had deteriorated. Rudolf Angue died just few hours later.

“One of our brothers here in prison has died,” a source at the prison (another detainee) told MMI.

According to our source, “Rudolf Angue has been sick and the prison authorities kept him till the situation was worst before he was taken to the hospital.”

MMI gathered on good authority that detainees contribute regularly to cover them during sickness but when any of them is sick nobody is ready to take care of them.

“Most at times here in the Buea prison, inmates have a monthly contribution, called sick contribution,” the source revealed adding that: “Each inmate gives 100frs and when we get sick and go to the prison hospital, we do not even have any medication.”

He further lamented that: “before we go to the hospital we are asked to pay some money before we are taken to the hospital.”

Late Tanger Rudolf Angue was arrested several years back in a village called Teke, in Meme division of the restive South West region due to the raging armed conflict in the two English speaking regions.
