Buea Mayor to demolish buildings without permits

The Buea Council has warned people without building permits to regularize their situations by May 24 or their buildings will be demolished against their will.

In a public announcement signed by Mayor David Mafani Namange, the Council warns buildings without permits will be demolished “at the expense of the owner of the building”.

He says those guilty must “regularize their situations on or before the 24th of May 2023”.

The move is likely one of the measures the Buea Council promised to take to curb haphazard construction in the city, after floods swept many houses in the town in March.

The Council said the floods were more devastating because people had built on the waterway, although observers blame the Council for allowing the haphazard construction to happen.

The Council demolished dozens of houses that were built near the water ways just after the floods that killed two, injured many and destroyed millions worth of property.
