Buea Motorbike Riders Plead With Authorities To Revert Decision Prohibiting Circulation

Commercial Motorbike Riders in the Buea Municipality are on bended knees, pleading with Municipal and Administrative authorities, to reconsider the decision prohibiting circulation of motorcycles.

They extended their pleas, in a letter addressed to the Mayor of the Buea Municipality, Ekema Patrick Esunge, and the Divisional Office of Buea, Kouam Wokam Paul.

According to the bike riders, it has been all difficult for them to fend for themselves and their families ever since the ban was enforced. They urged the authorities to reconsider the decision by suspending the ban.

“We understand that the decision was because of security reasons. But now that everything is getting back to normal, we pray that the authorities allow us to continue working. It has not been easy for us. We have been home since the ban, and our children cannot go to school. It’s been very difficult for us,” Thomas Ngankam, a bike rider in Long Street said.

The riders affirmed that they shall collaborate with security forces to enforce law and order in Buea.
“We promise to always respect the various laws and collaborate with authorities to bring about serenity in Buea,” Richard Nkem, another bike rider in Molyko said.

The Mayor of Buea Council, Patrick Ekema Esunge, banned the circulation of motorbikes in the Municipality, Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

In an official communiqué, the Mayor said the decision was necessitated by the fact that the Anglophone pro-indepencence fighters used motorbikes to carry out their activities in Buea.

The decision was received with mixed feelings among Buea denizens. Many criticised the move, given that commercial bikes had become so popular in the Municipality, as they could meander through difficult and untarred roads.
