Buea: Pan African rights lawyer visits CHRDA, urges civil society to support courts in enhancing justice

By Tata Mbunwe

The Buea-based Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa, CHRDA, today received Dr. Robert Eno, Registrar of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, who urged the civil society to join the law court in the tedious task of enhancing justice.

Barrister Agbor Nkongho, founder and President of CHRDA, this Monday afternoon at CHRDA headquarters, Great Soppo, Buea, received Dr. Eno.
Barrister Agbor Nkongho, said the organization was honored to receive the rights lawyer, adding that their “discussion on the Court was very refreshing”.

“Civil society has a major role to play in supporting the court. We shall accompany the Court in achieving its objectives and to work for the interest of each and every African,” said Barrister Agbor Nkongho.

Such civil society, according to the World Bank, will include community groups, non-governmental organizations [NGOs], labor unions, indigenous groups, charitable organizations, faith-based organizations, professional associations, and foundations.
According to CHRDA, all these actors should accompany the justice system as both parties seek to achieve a just society.

While celebrating World Human Rights Day this December 10, CHRDA said its fight for human rights in Cameroon has been hampered by the conflicts rocking Cameroon’s North West, South West, Far North, and East Regions, with the COVID-19 pandemic making matters worse.

The organization launched a Human Rights Handbook on December 10, alongside a Human Rights Resource Centre, which its Founder said would educate Cameroonians on their basic rights especially during the ongoing conflicts.
