Buea Central market opens its doors
After a decade of anticipation, the wait is finally over for residents of Buea. Today, the first phase of the Buea Central Market project is being inaugurated at Bwitingi, marking a significant milestone for the city. Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam, is gracing the occasion with his presence, underlining the importance of this long-awaited development.
“This is a great day for Buea,” exclaimed market vendor, Aïcha N’guangué. “For years, we’ve been working in cramped spaces, facing the elements. This new market will provide a safe and organized environment for us to conduct our business.”
The project, initiated ten years ago, aims to modernize Buea’s central market, offering improved facilities and infrastructure for both vendors and customers.
Local resident, Joseph Mbamendé, echoed N’guangué’s sentiment. “This market will not only benefit vendors, but the entire community. It will create jobs, boost the local economy, and make Buea an even more attractive place to live.”
Details about the size and capacity of the first phase haven’t been released yet, but it’s expected to significantly improve the situation for vendors who have been struggling with limited space and outdated facilities.
The inauguration ceremony is expected to draw a large crowd, with local dignitaries and residents eager to celebrate this long-awaited development. The completion of the Buea Central Market project has been a major talking point in the city for years, and today’s ceremony marks a turning point for Buea’s economic and social landscape.
