Buea: Underprivileged women to compete for FCFA 1 million on Women’s Day

By Daniel D.

The most enterprising underprivileged woman in Buea will walk home with a cash prize of FCFA 1 million as part of the International Women’s Day on March 8.

The money will be donated by Boissons du Cameroun, formerly known as Brasseries du Cameroun, which says it is meant to encourage hard work among women as well as help the underprivileged.

The announcement was made during the launch of the 39th edition of International Women’s Day in Buea by the Southwest Regional Delegation of Women Empowerment and the family, Lucia Ediage Sona, on Friday, March 1.

The event featured a march from OIC Market to Buea Independence Square, where women carried placards advocating for gender equality and other important causes.

At Bongo Square, the gathering point for the women, prayers were offered for the spiritual empowerment of women, peace and prosperity in the land, wisdom for leadership, and investment in women.

The prayers were led by various female religious leaders, including Rev. Sobe Florence, Pastor Nostra, and Evangelist Regina Molua.

As part of the International Women’s Day celebration, scheduled activities include human investment at the Governor’s office and Buea Chief’s palace, free screenings for HIV, cancer, and suicide levels, and a football match.

However, a notable highlight is the entrepreneurial competition set for Tuesday, March 6, at the Women Empowerment Centre in Buea.

Underprivileged women will showcase their entrepreneurial or self-sustaining skills, and the winner will be awarded the significant prize of FCFA 1 million on March 8.

This year’s International Women’s Day is being commemorated under the theme “Investment in Women: Accelerating Progress,” reflecting the commitment to promoting the economic empowerment of women and fostering their progress in various spheres.

The women competing for the Biosson Du Cameroun prize are among dozens who have been forced by the Anglophone Crisis to take refuge in Buea.

The crisis triggered displacement of over a million people, many of whom are living in urban areas like Buea, which has been relatively calm.
