Visually impaired students cripple circulation in protest against land grabbing

By Amina Hilda

Some visually impaired students of the Buea Bulu Blind Center in Buea , Fako division of the South West region have protested against what they say is the illegal grabbing of land belonging to the institution.

The visually impaired students stormed the streets of Buea yesterday, crippling circulation for a while as they made known their grievances. They also mounted roadblocks. They are said to have accused the Chief of Bomaka Village of attempting to sell land on which the school is established.

According to one the visually impaired students who identified herself only as Christel, they wer forced to flood the streets because of ongoing construction of private homes on land belonging to the centre.

She said, ” they have already started building the other part of the school. With all the government property that exist in this Cameroon, why is it only the blind school that they want to sell?”
She reiterated that they are being underestimated, reason they are treated with levity.

in such a manner, therefore leaving them with no option but to block the roads and make their voices heard.
” It’s because they don’t consider us, they are doing what pleases them. So one day they will just come and say you poeple should go and we will just go? So we have to block the roads because if we don’t block the road they will not know we are serious,” Christel told MMI.

The strike action left many stranded along the Buea-Mutengene highway. As at the time of compiling this report, security officers were said to be negotiating for the protesting students to leave the road.
