Camair-Co to lay off 130 employees as 110 billion debt weighs on – Reports

The management of the Cameroon Airlines Corporation, Camair-Co, has revealed the company will be laying off 130 employees as economic hardship soars amid the company’s debt burden of FCFA 110 billion, according to EcoNews.

The online economic news platform reports that Camair-Co’s Managing-Director, Louis Georges Njipendi, sent a note to the 130 employees explaining the economic hardship facing the corporation.

“Pursuant to the provisions of Article 40 of the law of 14 August 1992 on the Labour Code, I have the honour to send you herewith the list of workers I intend to dismiss at the end of the six-month period of layoff,” Louis Njipendi stated in a correspondence sent to the 130 employees.

According to Camair-Co’s boss, the selection criteria for the 130 employees to be dismissed is based on professional skills, longetivity of the workers in the company, and the family responsibilities of the employees.

Cameroon’s once buoyant airline, Camair-Co, has been on the verge of collapse and the current Boeing 737 aircraft used by the company only for internal flights was rented from Ukraine this October for a three-month period, and will be returned by the end of this month, reports EcoNews.

The Corporation only resumed flights on October 18 this year following an eight-month suspension.

In July this year, Government allocated a sum of FCFA 15 billion to revamp the company through the purchase of new aircrafts and facilities for the falling company.
