Cameroon: 12-year-old student dies after drowning in Mayo Kaliao river, Maroua

A 12-year-old student whose name we got as Housseini Bouba Makadji has died after drowning in the Mayo Kaliao river in Maroua, Far North Region of Cameroon.

On December 7, 2022 Abdoulaye went, as usual, for swimming in the company of his comrades who could not save him when he suddenly started drowning.

The body was retrieved by firefighters, MMI has learned.

Many have blamed the parents for failing to supervise their children.

They also urged local authorities to fight fiercely against the constant presence of minors in dangerous areas such as the Mayo Kaliao river.

For almost a year now, cases of drowning have been on the rise in the city of Maroua, leaving behind inconsolable families.
