Cameroon: 17-year-old writer receives support after being dragged to court for publishing a book

Marzouka Oummou Hani, the 17-year-old writer who is facing charges against her, for her novel, is receiving support from several media personalities.

After being bashed by elders of her community for “demonizing their culture,” several other persons have stood up for her and applauded her courage.

Despite the backlash, many believe she rather has to be encouraged by the authorities for her intellectual capabilities rather than crucify her. renowned Cameroonian media personality Landry Ndenmeko Bankoue says he “wishes this shameful procedure against her in court disappears.”

He adds, “While Cameroonians ought to promote the genius of this young lady, the young girl rather risks jail time just for using the name of her village in a novel.”

Award winning writer Djaili Amadou Amal has also praised Marzouka Oummou Hani and proposed to assist her in rewriting her novel. The purpose she says is to take out the ambiguities of the fiction story that have triggered the elders of her community.

Marzouka Oummou Hani is currently facing charges of ancestral defamation in her book and is scheduled to appear in court in Ngaoundere. Her prosecutors have demanded over 150 million FCFA from the teenager in damages.
