Cameroon: 43 private hygiene companies suspended over violations

By Daniel D.

Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie, has suspended 43 private sanitation companies for what he termed “non-compliance with the laws and the regulations in force”.

The suspension, outlined in a document signed on April 1 by the head of MISANTE, is slated to last for three months, with the possibility of renewal.

The decision to suspend these companies follows an inspection and monitoring mission conducted from October 20 to November 24, 2023, by teams from the Directorate of Health Promotion.

The inspection revealed numerous instances of non-compliance with established laws and regulations governing hygiene and sanitation practices.

However, the ministerial decision did not provide details regarding the laws these companies violated before being suspended.

Among the suspended companies are HSA CARE SARL, YOU ARE GAK, HYTRA SARL, SOPHYCAM, and POWER LEAN, among others.

The work of these companies is however, different from that the hygiene and sanitation company HYSSACAM, which is in charge of urban garbage collection and disposal.

The suspended companies play a crucial role in maintaining hygiene standards within industrial facilities, often manufacturing various chemicals used for this purpose.

However, their failure to adhere to legal requirements has prompted the government to halt their operations temporarily.

The suspension affects a range of activities undertaken by these companies, including disinfestation, rodent control, disinfection, and other hygiene and sanitation work across the country.

These entities could remain suspended until they rectify their non-compliance issues and operate in accordance with established laws and regulations.
