Cameroon – Anglophone Crisis: REDHAC Indicts Government For Blacklisting Civil Society Actors, Journalists

The Human Rights Defence Network for Africa, REDHAC has accused the Cameroon government of blackmailing civil society organisations and the press, despite their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the prevailing separatist conflict in the country’s English speaking North West and South West regions.

The rights organisation has called on Cameroonians to take their destiny into their hands or sink under the repressive Biya regime.

Addressing pressmen in Douala, Monday June 3, Maximillien Ngo Mbe, the CEO of REDHAC regretted that government has employed unorthodox means to thwart the civil society in its efforts to work towards a peaceful solution to the Anglophone crisis.

“We have been working tirelessly to bring peace to this country, but we realise that government is using hard and soft means blackmail, corrupt and manipulate some of us.”

Phillipe Nanga, Founder and Manager of Un Monde Avenir, a partner to REDHAC emphasized that, the media has a great role to play for any meaningful change to come to Cameroon.

“We know the press is under surveillance, but no mobilisation through constructive discuss can be done without the media,” he pointed out.

Barrister Alice Nkom, Board Chair of the organisation says that change will never come to Cameroon if Cameroonians do not take their destiny into their hands.
She blames President Paul Biya who has been in power for close to four decades for the country’s worsening state, now rocked by a Separatist Anglophone conflict, Boko Haram and a severe economic crisis.
