“Cameroon has conquered COVID-19 but …” – Archbishop Samuel Kleda

Cameroon’s national episcopal conference has offered an undisclosed financial package to the archbishop of the metropolitan diocese of Douala, Archbishop Samuel Kleda in a brief ceremony Tuesday, August 4, 2020, in Douala.

According to Father Kizito Mbala Onana, national coordinator of the Caritas Foundation under the national episcopal conference, the financial assistance is to encourage Archbishop Kleda in the production of the coronavirus medicine.

Accepting the package in good faith, the archbishop who doubles as a trade-practitioner thanked the donors.

Speaking to the press, Archbishop Samuel Kleda said “…we have defeated coronavirus in Cameroon. This does not mean the virus no longer exists in Cameroon. We have defeated it because we have an effective medicine that cures the coronavirus virus.”

In an earlier exclusive interview he granted to STV, a local television channel in Cameroon, the prelate mentioned that he and his team have treated over 6,000 COVID-19 patients in Cameroon with the medicine he produced.

He noted that over the months, the number of people seeking medicine has reduced indicating that the level of contamination is on a decrease. He equally adds that mortality as a result of COVID-19 is rare.

He applauds the government for a vibrant effort to get Cameroonians to carry out voluntary COVID-19 tests.

Addressing Cameroonians, Archbishop Kleda says “People should go and be tested. If anyone is tested positive, take treatment, and get well. When you shy away from the test, if you have the virus and it becomes chronic, it can lead to death while you are home”.

The archbishop, however, failed to comment on why the government of Cameroon has not officially recognized his COVID-19 medicine.
