Cameroon Holds Conference to Strengthen Defence Partnerships

Cameroon is assessing its defence partnerships as the world becomes increasingly multipolar. Cameroon took stock of its current partnerships and identified new opportunities for cooperation at the second military cooperation conference held in Yaounde from August 9–11, 2023.

The conference focused on “Cameroonian Military Cooperation in the Era of the Return to the Multi-Polarization of Power in International Relations.” The changing security landscape in Africa reflects a growing complexity and multipolarity.

Defence attachés and military advisers from Cameroon’s diplomatic missions abroad attended the second military cooperation conference. Representatives from Cameroon’s partner countries, including France, the United States, and China, also presented at the conference.

The conference recommended that Cameroon strengthen its cooperation with its partners in the fight against terrorism and transnational crime. The conference also urged Cameroon to increase its defence spending and develop its own defence industry.

Cameroon found the second military cooperation conference to be a significant event. The country had an opportunity to assess its current defence partnerships and identify new opportunities for cooperation. The conference also emphasised the importance of defence cooperation in a multipolar world.

In recent years, Cameroon has faced a number of security challenges, including the Boko Haram insurgency in the north affecting economic activities and the armed conflict in the Anglophone regions. These challenges have highlighted the need for Cameroon to strengthen its defence partnerships.

Joseph Beti Assomo, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in Charge of Defence, highlighted the importance of the conference to Cameroon’s security.

“The second military cooperation conference was a success. It was an opportunity for us to take stock of our current partnerships and to identify new opportunities for cooperation. We are committed to strengthening our defence partnerships in order to better protect our country from security threats,” he said.

Cameroon is a country in Central West Africa. The Atlantic Ocean borders Cameroon on the southwest, the Republic of the Congo on the southeast, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea on the south, the Central African Republic on the east, and Nigeria on the northwest.

Cameroon is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), and the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC). The country is also a partner of the United States, France, and China.

Cameroon’s military is composed of the Cameroonian Army, the Cameroonian Navy, and the Cameroonian Air Force. The military is responsible for defending Cameroon’s borders, protecting its citizens, and maintaining law and order.

The Cameroonian military is facing a number of challenges, including a lack of funding, a shortage of equipment, and corruption. However, the military is committed to protecting Cameroon’s security and sovereignty.
