Cameroon in pole position ahead of AFCON2021 opener against Burkina Faso

As time elapses towards the opening of the most anticipated footballing competition in the African continent, many Cameroonians as well as Burkinabes, are anxious to experience the outcome of the opening match.



It is worth recalling that Cameroon has in the past years emerged victorious in almost every football encounter with their first AFCON 2021 opponent, Burkina Faso.


During the pre-match conference, the Indomitable Lions’ team coach, Antonio Conceicao, stated “We have to be positive, perform our responsibility. We have to bring back the old good days of football in Cameroon.”



On his part, The Stallion’s coach, Kamou Malo noted “our squad is young, but very talented, with great team unity and solidarity. We have what it takes to surprise the world.”



Both nations have clashed nine times in different competitions and friendlies, with Cameroon beating Burkina Faso 4 times, recording four draws and 1 defeat.



In the AFCON domain, both vying parties have clashed twice.



On February 7, 1998, Burkina Faso hosted the AFCON and was beaten by Cameroon on home soil in the opening match which ended in a 1 goal to nothing victory in favor of Cameroon.



Drawing the second AFCON encounter with a goal each, on January 14th, 2017, hosted by Gabon.



The 2021 AFCON pairing gives both teams a count of three clashes, during which The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will either increase their victory toll or The Stallions of Burkina Faso narrow the defeat gap against The Lions.



The Cameroonian national team consists of top European Clubs players namely; Frank Andre Anguissa of Italian club Napoli, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting of German club Bayern Munich, Karl Toko Ekambi of French club Olympique Lyonnaise amongst others, all of Whom are making great strides in football.


The match Cameroon against Burkina Faso begins at 5 pm this Sunday, January 9, 2022.
