Cameroon Journalists Trade Union – SW Chapter demands justice for jailed journalist, Samuel Wazizi

The trial of Pidigin News broadcaster, Samuel Wazizi comes up on Thursday May 7th 2020 at Buea High court in the South West region of Cameroon. Arrested in August 2019 in Buea, he has been held incommunicado for nine months despite calls by defending lawyers for their client to appear in Court.

The Cameroon Journalists Trade Union South West chapter is calling on the judicial service in Cameroon to respect the law and let the journalist be judged and sentenced if found guilty or be released if innocent of the accusations.

In an exclusive interview with Mediafrique Radio in Buea Wednesday May 6th, the President of the South West chapter, Derick Jato says “…the simple question where is journalist Samuel Wazizi has not been answered by anyone for the past nine months. This is a problem. We know Cameroon is a state of law and therefore the law should be respected and justice rendered to our colleague”.

He has called on journalists to be present at the court premises in their numbers not only to show solidarity with Samuel Wazizi but to with their other colleagues in Cameroon. To him, the detention of Samuel Wazizi means the press in Cameroon is not free and any journalist can be a victim of the regime at anytime.

Samuel Wazizi was arrested in Buea and accused collaborating with separatist fighters in the restive North West and South West regions. He is one of many journalists jailed in Cameroon today.
