The minister of decentralisation and local development in Cameroon is asking city and municipal mayors in the country to as a matter of urgency ensure a change of uniform of municipal police.
In a fax message signed by minister George Elanga Obam and addressed to senior divisional officers in Cameroon Wednesday April 7, 2021, he states that uniforms of municipal police are creating confusion with those used by the national police.
In Douala, some traders at the Douala Central Market have in the past complained of impersonation of some municipal policemen as national police to extort money from traders.
The fax message from Minister George Elanga Obam has not set a deadline for the change to be effective nor any penalty for councils that will ignore the order.
In 2014, the government of Cameroon in a related development ordered private security companies in the country to change the uniform of their security men to yellow colour to avoid confusion with the national police and other security and military forces.
